OT - All Things Narnia
« on: January 02, 2017, 04:22:03 PM »
Since both LM and I love Narnia I thought it might be fun to have a thread specifically for it where we can discuss the TV series, the films and most importantly the books at our leisure and probably have fun casting people from Once and Doctor Who in our own imaginary versions of the books.

THE BASIC LINKS FOR NARNIA
There have been two major TV/movie productions of (some of) the Narnia books but neither have finished out the set (boo!) Though I have heard rumors that the newer franchise might go through with making The Silver Chair after all (yeah!)

The old Pevensie Children from the 1988-1991 BBC production
The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe (1988) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094500/
Prince Caspian & The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (1989) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096681/?ref_=tt_rec_tt
The Silver Chair (1991)  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098912/

The new Pevensie children from the 2005-2010 movies
The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe (2005)  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0363771/
Prince Caspian (2008) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0499448/
The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0980970/
The Silver Chair (pre-production/rumored) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1223947/

And of course the best Narnia... THE BOOKS!
Publication order
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1950)
Prince Caspian: The Return to Narnia (1951)
The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (1952)
The Silver Chair (1953)
The Horse and His Boy (1954)
The Magician's Nephew (1955)
The Last Battle (1956)

Chronological order
The Magician's Nephew (1955)
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1950)
The Horse and His Boy (1954)
Prince Caspian: The Return to Narnia (1951)
The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (1952)
The Silver Chair (1953)
The Last Battle (1956)

The reason I decided to start this topic was because over the holidays my sister talked about a Narnia article she had read, that stated that C. S. Lewis had never meant for readers to think that Susan was dead but barred from Aslan's Country, but that in his mind she had drifted away from Aslan (God) and gotten too interested in worldly things and that her journey back to faith would be a longer more 'grown-up' book that he wasn't up to writing. My sister couldn't remember where she'd read it, but  a quick search brought up a few article on the subject with links below to a couple of the better ones.

So as Lewis challenged the young people of his day... how would a potential eighth Narnia book all about Susan have played out? What would it have been called? Would it start with a letter to Susan at University (or wherever she was at to miss the train to Aslan's Country) getting the news that basically her entire family and her friends had been killed in a train crash? That seems like a pretty bleak start to me, but I'm not sure where else it could be started and I can certainly see why Lewis thought such a book might be too grown up for his audience.

Okay -- you do know that Narnia has a tie to Dr. Who.  Tom Baker did one of the movies and I'll have to review to remember which one.

I actually took a class in religion on Religious Dimensions in C. S. Lewis.  I also did one on Madeline L'Engle.  We talked about Susan in the class with "The Last Battle."  The class decided, and I argue for this, that Susan wanted to live in the physical world and enjoy life.  By remembering Narnia, she had to remember that someone created everything and was the Savior.

Also, don't forget that Narnia has been mentioned already on Once.

More later.

I haven't read the books, but I have seen all three movies. I would love to read the books if I could find them.

I haven't read the books, but I have seen all three movies. I would love to read the books if I could find them.
The books have been re-printed many times so they should be easy to track down in a library, antique mall, book store or of course online. Also the last three Narnia books (Horse and His Boy, Magician's Nephew, Last Battle) have never been filmed so there is more to Narnia than what you've already seen.

The Horse and His Boy - This is a story set between Wardrobe and Caspian and it features an abused boy who runs away with a talking (i.e. Narnian) horse and they have many adventures trying to get to Narnia and a better life. I admit this is my least favorite of the series, but it's not a bad book by any means.

The Magician's Nephew - In which we learn about the creation of Narnia, the deeper magic, and some of the backstory of Jadis (The White Witch). The main characters in the book are Diggory (in later years Professor Kirk from Wardrobe) and Polly and if you think Tolkien was the only writer to use magic rings think again! ...I love this book! It's my favorite and I long to see a film version though I doubt even today's vis effects could truly match imagination for this one.

The Last Battle - This book is the official end of Narnia. It features three of the four Pevensie children, Eustace and Jill, Diggory and Polly, and Tirian (The Last King of Narnia). It's a different kind of book from all the others; it deals with an end of days type of scenario where everyone must choose what they believe and whom they will follow; Good = Aslan or Evil = Tash. ...I'd be nervous if Hollywood actually decided to film this one since the message of good vs. evil would probably be mishandled.
