Title: What do you think?
Post by: bacali on September 27, 2019, 07:47:40 PM
So what did you all think about the first Survivor? I read it was the lowest rating Survivor yet

I thought I'd like it better with Boston Rob on the show, but, I honestly felt the way Sandra and Rob are on this island giving advice was stupid.
You get chosen and boat ride to the Island of Idols and out pop Rob and Sandra. ..kind of ...as I said stupid. But,
I usually have to warm into a show since the first show is always hard to follow the cast.
So, I do hope it gets better after coming off this BB season. I have huge expectations for Survivor!

I was away when it aired and only just watched the premiere so here are my thoughts:

I enjoyed the Rob/Sandra twist. That’s a surprise because I thought the whole idea was stupid when I first heard it and maybe it’s still a bit... off. But I really enjoyed seeing Sandra again especially and my favorite bit was them sneaking into a spy shack at tribal council to listen in and comment on the players! I don’t know how I’ll feel about this twist in a few weeks but for right now I had fun with it.

Orange Tribe (them who lost)
I don’t know that it’s your best move to vote out one of your strongest guys first but I loved it. It was the right move for Vince, Elaine and Tom for sure but the rest maybe not? We’ll see. This season feels like it will be a twist fest so it probably behooves most of these players to vote based on personality and allegiance rather than challenge strength. Survivor just isn’t the same game as it used to be.

Purple Tribe (them who won)
Most of my focus here is on Janet and how well she did! She was such obvious first boot on her tribe and she knew it so she has done everything she can to prove her worth and I think it’s working fairly well. Grappling hooks are hard o master so kudos to her for not only stepping up but in getting it to hook right away. Again it’s not an easy thing to do and it was way risky for her, but she knew she needed to step up and dang it she did.she also joins the short list of people who made fire without matches, flint or a glass lense of some kind. It’s probably a very short list.

I kind of enjoyed the island of the idols. Hard to keep it secret, though. Wondering how long it will be kept so, and wondering if it will cause alliances because of shared knowledge, or target those who keep the secret. Could be interesting! I didn't mind their commentary. Any Boston Robb time is good time in my book.
I really liked Elaine. She reminds me of many people I know, and her sense of humor will make it an entertaining season for as long as she lasts.
We will see if my first impressions last beyond the next show!

I like Elaine too and was glad she stayed.
On the Island of Idols I haven't formed an opinion yet but wondered too how long it will stay a secret.

Man this season is going great so far! Two exciting and satisfying boots so far! I’ve heard that the casting  hanged starting this season and it shows. More married people. More misfits. Fewer bikini babes. I’m digging this cast so far.

You and me both! Seems like a recipe for a good season! Although I have formed no real favorites, it is nice to have several to choose from in this cast.

There are some smart girls on this cast.  They got rid of the nice looking one right away.  Smart move.

More excitement as the women on the orange tribe choose Tom over Vince. I realized as it was happening that I really like Tom and have no problem losing Vince in his stead. The real question with orange tribe is why, if the women have decided to stick together, would they vote out Vince (or Tom) over Aaron or Dean? By forming an all women's alliance they have already somewhat given up the fight for challenge strength because its fairly clear that the weakest players on this tribe are female (Karishma notably terrible this week). So why not cut one of their big dudes (especially Aaron who bears them a grudge) now?

Karishma as I said was terrible this week both at the game and at the puzzle, but I would like to speak up for her a bit. It was so weird and awful that nobody appeared to comfort her in any way when she was hurt and that appeared to be a fairly serious cut especially in survival conditions, yet they showed them a few feet away seemingly uncaring of their tribemates pain. Not cool. Her reaction was extreme (saying they were dead to her) but I felt her pain. Feeling like no one cares about you is devastating and based on their actions when she was hurt it might even be true. True they voted out Vince instead of her, but they made no effort to keep the vote off her and it does seem like she's just a convenient number for them at the moment. It's sad.

People I liked in this episode:
Tom
Tommy
Sandra

People I disliked:
No one really. Though I think Jamal and Karishma's attitudes were very negative instead of adaptive. How Jack reacted to being left out is a far healthier game response then vowing vengeance or saying they're all dead to me. Just saying.

I love this cast! Casting made an effort this season to fill out more than bathing suits and it shows.

After that successful sneak into the other camp I hated to see Vince leave with a HII.  I liked him.
This is a great cast I think.

You and me both! It was a cool mission! I do like this cast a lot. Glad to see normal contestants.

While that vote was certainly exciting... seems like a huge mistake not to take out the person they’ve all been alienating for the last week or so.

I don’t understand why at least ONE of those women couldn’t take the trouble to befriend Karishma and make her feel wanted. If they’re going to exclude her then they should boot her.

Granted she seems like a difficult personality but a little effort to make her feel like part of the group could’ve changed everything.

On the other side Nora’s island of the idols journey was hilarious from start to finish. Sitting her out of the challenge was the funniest part!

I don't understand why they are alienating Karishma .  Why don't some of them get her on their side for an extra vote?  Are they all so sure of their positions on the tribe that they don't think they need her.  They act like she isn't even human.  It is almost like bullying.
I can understand why Nora is on the outs.  She doesn't have common sense if she thought her approach to getting the caller position would work.

Maybe I’m a bit cranky because I liked Tom, but I’m actually bored with the constant blindsides. All this means is that the ENDGAME may be that much more boring with the biggest 'threat' going every week as they all struggle and fight over who gets to go to the end and win against Karishma and Nora.

The validity of the move depends on who you are. For the old purple tribe (minus maybe Nora) it was a fine move (providing they don't plan on winning ANY challenges) as they have three expendable people on their tribe in Karishma, Tom and Dean and they can't know for sure what will happen if the other tribe goes to tribal council with a four-four orange v. purple split. So I guess good for them on that front. However for me I'd much rather see them vote out Karishma so we can stop watching her struggled in challenges and to make the TV show more interesting. Also I think it's worth noting that if they do vote out Tom, Dean and Karishma, then at the merge when they join up with their old allies they may just find that the four orange players left have had time to form some new bonds on this new tribe and it could well fall that they may just target the new orange tribe people over the old orange tribe people just based on the more recent bonds they've formed.

On a positive note I enjoyed the Detective Dean Kowalsky bit early in the show. I still don’t care one way or another about Dean (probably wise given his odds of going home next week), but that was fun. Am I the only one who always thinks of Stargate when I hear the name Kowalsky? Probably.

As for next week no matter what the promos show it seems unlikely that the new purple tribe can lose with Karishma still on orange. So my prediction is that Dean goes next week and in the unlikely event that purple really does somehow against all odds lose, than I think it might be Elaine going. I just can't picture either Aaron or Missy going to rocks to save her and everybody seems to recognize the social threat she poses. So yeah. That could happen there.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with you about Karishma. She may be a very intelligent attorney, but, she plays Survivor terribly and has to go !
And, as far as this season having Rob and Sandra as mentors. ...boring! I find their jobs stupid.

Kind of a blaaah episode. Although I did like the wrestling match! Island of the Idols doesn't live up to it's hype--and neither do Sandra and Rob. Maybe they have something else in mind, let's hope so!

Glad that you agree with me.
Honestly, when I heard Rob was going to be on this season I was excited. But, this role they have given him is ridiculous.
Then at Tribal Council to sit , hidden …. really stupid idea.

Aaron is a dumb dumb who loves power. Targeting Elaine to avoid rocks is one thing, but he was really into getting her out and he has been since day 1. I don't see why. I mean I do see how likable she is and that no sane person will want to take her to the end, but that' a day 30 problem. Unless Elaine was some massive challenge threat than nobody should worry about her this early.

Then he doubled down on the dumb by continuing to act like he was 100 percent on board with Vokai even in the tribal council whispering. Everyone on that tribe should now have a legitimate reason not to trust Aaron and he could well suffer for it at the merge and I for one am hoping he does.

I liked Jason and I'm sad to see him go like this. He really did nothing wrong here and only went home because they happened ti sit out Elaine and she got a huge reward for that. This scenario was better than seeing Elaine backstabbed that hard by Missy & Aaron I suppose, but I wish it had been touchy-feely Dan to go instead of Jason.

I like Tommy too. And Jack. I dislike Aaron. Everybody else is kind of up and down.

It was one of those glad/sad types of tribal councils. Glad Elaine got to stay but sad Jason paid the price. And Aaron...hope he get a nice juicy blindside soon!

Well that was a distressing two hours of television.  :16:

I know this stuff is a mine field but I’ve never been on-board with this ‘believe all women’ thing because that pre-supposed that women wouldn’t lie about this stuff and this episode is proof (among a world of proofs) that this is not true. Sometimes women lie. This is why you have to get either an admission of guilt, witnesses or physical evidence.

But in this episode we saw very clearly that at least ONE woman wasn’t lying and that was Janet and they not only used her and then shoved her into the mud for good measure but they messed with her head to the point where she didn’t even seem to know what really happened anymore.

What Missy and Elizabeth (quite probably some others) did in using Janet and this Dan situation (separate issue) to get what they wanted in Survivor was despicable. Full stop.

Dan's attitude I can kind of understand. He got truth from Janet and a pack of lies from Elizabeth and Missy and he chose to believe the young women because that narrative suited him. He didn’t want to believe that what Janet said was true so he didn’t.

As for his actions... look nothing that was SHOWN seemed that bad to me. If this was regular life I'd say avoid the guy if he makes you uncomfortable (frankly this whole Dan thing reminded me of that other Biden story a year or so back but I digress) and since this is Survivor I'd say just vote him out if he makes you uncomfortable. I don't see the need to ruin his life and I certainly don't like the way the whole situation was used to get ahead in Survivor.

At this point I feel like I want everyone to lose except for Janet and I don't feel great about the chances of that happening.  :(

Has anyone else ever been voted out with 2 idols?

And in the last blindside, hoping Janet can get back on her feet. The look on Missy's face as everything was going down made me seethe. I used to like a lot of these survivors, now I don't know, maybe things will get better as we go along.

Well that was better than last week wasn't it? -Dancekick-

Missy and Elizabeth's faces when they saw Aaron was voted out were priceless. Priceless!  :Woot_Emoticon:

Missy: 'I am not aggressive'
Missy later: 'kill her (Elaine) slowly and methodically' ... #4846

And really Missy says she wasn’t coming for Tommy when the only votes in Jeff’s urn were for Tommy and Missy? Come on. Even Fairplay wouldn't try that one.

Oh it's also worth noting that (if I have the facts strait in my head) Lauren voted out Aaron to break up the trio or Aaron, Missy and Elizabeth, and Missy/Elizabeth TRIED to vote out Tommy to split up him and Lauren. For some reason I enjoy that.

At this point I wouldn't mind a Tommy or Dean win if we can't have Janet, though she's absolutely my first choice to win. A Nora win would be a hoot but come on we've already seen how she rambles on, can you see anyone voting for her even if she's sitting next to Dan in a surprise final two? Honestly I don't know that Dan can't win anyway. For all we know he could beat Janet in the final two and leave all of us stunned. I truly hope he doesn't win though because aside from anything else this would trigger a new wave of podcasts about what happened.

Lauren and Elaine I'm unsure of because after weeks of no exit interviews I still don't know whether they were also involved in using Dan's touching as a strategy to get ahead. We were shown enough to know that Elizabeth and Missy did use it.

Back to talking about the actual game of Survivor...I wasn't bothered by Dean's decision to warn Tommy. Dean had no real connection with Nora, Karishma or Elaine as far we know. If he had one with Tommy than it was probably a good call to save him and screw over the other three. If Elaine and Nora are the next two out that could make Dean the swing vote between the duos of Dan/Janet & Tommy/Lauren which should give him a birth in the final four if nothing else. But really with this group who knows. It hasn't been predictable I'll give them that. If the Kellee/Dan/Janet incident hadn't happened I think this would be a very enjoyable season.

I haven't watched last Wednesday's show yet, so I can't comment on it. But, I know what you mean, ponytail. Many of the TC have them all whispering, getting up for a conversation...etc.
Give me back the TC where they all sat in one spot and only spoke to Jell.
Boy, are we getting testy. hahaha

Utter madness this season. I was all prepared to come on here and post about how I thought Janet and Lauren blew their chances of winning by allowing Noura to stay on as the supreme goat, but then the mysterious incident happened and who knows now. I just want Janet to win and bring balance back to the force.

Entertainment Weekly already has an article out with Probst about Dan's removal where he tells us.... absolutely nothing. They've also announced that they will pre-tape the 'reunion' show earlier in the day to protect the 'players', but what they really want to protect are their own fannies. They don't want to chance someone blurting out something on live TV that would make the show look bad so they'll pre-tape and edit out anything they don't want known. How boring.

That was a shocker, and Jeff made it sound like it was an incident with a staffer I'm guessing? It makes you wonder if they do enough vetting. Surely this isn't the first time he's been caught or complained about. Time to scramble!

Okay -- I went on Twitter after completing my Riverdale recap knowing nothing.  The first thing I see is Evel Dick implying that Dan must have won and CBS, in their reasoning to keep him from winning, had engineered and edited the whole thing to get Dan gone.  Probst wouldn't explain.  Varner agreed with Dick and called it sh*t  Of course Varner then got called on the carpet for outing someone at tribal.  Anyway -- both said they had heard rumors.  Both said that they didn't think that pretaping was for anything but CBS protection.  They can start editing as they tape.  Plus Dick heard that the audience might not be "an audience" but plants.  We all know that they've done that on BB.

Since I haven't been watching, I'm not sure what is going on.  If he did something improper, yes, they should remove him.  But then I think back to all the improper stuff that Jack and Jackson and Nick did and nothing was done.  How can one show call it one thing and the other get away with it.  Is this the end of Survivor?  I haven't checked the news feeds yet.

I haven't any idea what really happened. I had read that something happened to someone, I thought that it was a producer, when Dan went to get into a boat.
Then they had Kellee appear at the end of the show and never really said what did happen but, that it was inappropriate and Dan was taken off the cast. So evidently it had to do with her. She was sort of mute and very uncomfortable. So--
Who knows.
I couldn't tell if the show was pre-taped or not or whether the audience were CBS employees or  not. They only showed Amber ( Amba), Rob's wife and his daughters when they announced the All Star Survivor slated for Feb.
