The cars whizzed by without stopping, ignoring the hitchhiker's extended thumb.  The manual he studied made it seem easier than this.  He remembered the manual had not been updated since 1957 and now the calender told him it was 1986.  Maybe the humans did not pick up hitchhikers anymore.  He thought the human skin he had grown in the laboratory was attractive enough, a young man with smooth olive complexion, dark hair, and eyes the color of the sky on a bright, sunny day.   He turned toward traffic and stuck his thumb out again and was so surprised when he saw a car pull over that at first he just stood in his tracks.  Then he saw the arm from the car motion for him to come and he picked up his bag and headed toward the car.  As he slide into the seat next to the driver the driver turned to him and said, "Hello, young man.  I guess you need a ride.  My name is Jeffrey Dahmer.  Where are you headed?"

The cars whizzed by without stopping, ignoring the hitchhiker's extended thumb. Paulo "Peanut" Kolokotrones continued his slow plod along the dusty highway. Ahead he could see a few grain elevators popping up out of the flat Nebraska landscape through the heat haze of a scorching July day. His floppy hat helped somewhat, but the burning rays seemed to bake him like a foil wrapped potato in a 400 degree oven. He took a swig of warmish water from his bottle but it didn't help much. The stomach began to rumble, too. No wonder. He hadn't had a thing to eat since rummaging through the dumpster at the Pump and Pantry yesterday evening. Two more days to go. Two more days and he must be in Grand Island. He must be, there was no other option.

*puts on a stylish mustache and a silly pair of glasses*

The cars whizzed by without stopping; ignoring the hitchhiker's extended thumb... he wondered if perhaps he was going about this the wrong way. Mindful that all worlds had their own peculiar customs and the metal beasts of this one were probably unaware of the meaning of an outstretched thumb along a transit route, he lowered his thumb and picked a bouquet of wild-flora that was growing in untended patches along the pavement. Then clutching his welcome gift to his chest he strode into the middle of the road and extended his arms in greeting to the car racing towards him...

The cars whizzed by without stopping, ignoring the hitchhiker's extended thumb. Perhaps he had not given this enough thought. Julian had read all of the journals about life in the 60's and how he had hitched the summer of '69 to a music festival in New York which later became known as Woodstock.  It seemed like a great idea to recreate that trip and he hoped it would finally give him some way to connect with his father.  He just didn't expect it to be so hard to get a ride.  He was not going to give up on this dream though so he continued to walk ahead and keep the thumb out!  This would be his own adventure.
Here's to strong women. May we know them. May we be them. May we raise them.

The cars whizzed by without stopping, ignoring the hitchhiker's extended thumb. Times certainly had changed!
Phil remember the days of his youth , when it was unimportant whether he got to his destination in time, when cars stopped for anyone. Now, in 2014, he was older and people were more cautious.
If only he hadn't promised her "that date" for her birthday. If he weren't there, her heart would be broken, and this was the most important date in his life.
He imagined her getting all dressed up in her party dress, with her long curls peaking over her shoulders, while she perched on a chair looking out the window.
if the next car didn't stop... her big ,brown eyes would spill down tears, as she asked..." Mommy, where's Daddy, he promised me."
Please! Please! He prayed to God, as he heard a car approaching from the distance... Let this be the one.
