The closing of mental hospitals in the name of "human rights". Now these poor people are either homeless, in jail, or prison because there is no where else to put them. We have done more harm to them trying to protect their "rights" than we were when we cared for them in hospitals with trained personnel. Here in Georgia we now have these private "care homes" where a few people live together with care givers. The trouble is the "care givers" are people hired without qualifications (although this is not suppose to be the case), not enough people to do regular checks to be sure they are treated right, and the owners of these homes are making lots of money. We just recently had a case of a women who owned four such houses in middle Georgia, did not check the records of her employees, hired anyone who she could find to work cheap. The people who lived in one of these homes were being beaten and treated badly. The ones doing the abuse said that the owner told them it was okay. Sorry I got on my soapbox but having grown up in a town that had the largest mental hospital in the states at one time, I have compassion for these people. My father worked in the admission office, my mother was an occupational therapist, and I worked as a secretary in several areas. Now the buildings are left empty and the people are in jails and prisons. The percentage of inmates in jails that have mental problems is ridiculous.
