That we cannot put people with definitely mental problems who are a danger to themselves or others in institutions because it will violate their civil rights!
I am not only thinking of the recent tragedy but also many others.
There was a man in our community who was forced to shoot and kill his own grown son in self defense.  He had called the police to their home many times.  He could not get him put in an institution because it would violate his rights.  The police could take him in to jail for 24 hours but then he was back out.  There are many people out in this world who are afraid of other family members but have to live with it.

I agree with that one. It also isn't fair for people who aren't capable to make their own decisions to be in charge of making their own choices. Take my couisn for example, he is mentally about 12 (he is physically 22) and a few months ago he went out and got two giant tattoo's, got his tongue, eyebrow, upper ear,, lip and belly button pierced just because someone told him it was cool and we couldn't stop him.

I've come to realize that no matter how hard I try and say I am going to try ... to "get ahead" with all these Christmas preparations ... that I will never win. I'm always rushing and seemingly just making it.
So, at this moment...I am peeved...at whomever decided that Thanksgiving..."the" day when Santa Claus arrives .... is only one month before Christmas !!!!.
Whoever decided "when" the Pilgrims had Thanksgiving...should have said it was ... say... mid Oct...the beginning of Nov.
This way...we all would have so much more tme.
( And, let's think about it... I don't think they celebrated...when it was freezing out.)
So...this is my pet peeve....today... 4 Days before Christmas!!!! :34:

MP, you have heard this one before, people who use the "word" IRREGARDLESS.  :41:

Yes, and it makes my nerves jangle.  The non-word is complete nonsense; it's like a double negative, the prefix and suffix cancel each other out.  I think the "ir" somehow migrated over from "irrespective".

Another semantic pet peeve----people who use the phrase "point of fact".  It's OK grammatically but it's always followed by a statement of the fact itself.  It's like saying "Hey stupid, I'm about to give you a fact so pay attention."  I was interviewing for a job one time and the interviewer found a way to shoehorn "point of fact" into every third sentence.  By the end of the interview I wanted to give her the Cookie Monster treatment----------whipped cream pie right in the kisser!  POW! :72:

:41:  Another one of my personal favorites......henceforth! Hearing that word is like hearing fingernails run down a chalkboard! I went to a ADHD convention a few years back.  All the "big guns" in the field were there.  One of the psychiatrists, a quite famous psychiatrist in this particular area of study, punctuated every other sentence with HENCEFORTH.  I was so irritated by this I started counting the number of times he said that word.  My colleague found this very diverting! The grand total, you ask? Thirty four. In one hour.

The one that really makes me want to scream is a new one on the market, started by teenagers I think, but now it seems everyone under 30 uses it in every sentence at least once, and sometimes more.  That is the work "like".

Now that I started reading all the pet peeves in grammar.
What REALLY bothers me and is my #1 pet peeve...... the use of the word "I" all the time by everyone.
eg..Bob gave the ball to Tony and I....NO NO NO...
It's Bob gave the ball to Tony and ME.
Would you say...Bob gave the ball to I?

You hear this grammatical error by just about everyone!   :41:

I detest most politicians but the media is number two with a bullet.  The amount of misinformation put out in connection with Boston is nothing short of appalling.  Plus, the mad rush to be first "with the scoop" could well jeopardize the investigation and arrest of those responsible.

MP.. I get you.. misinformation to be first in the reporting... Makes me angry , too.   We just have too much media now that we didnt have years ago for everything. The "first with the scoop" isn't always the truth.
But,.. I honestly, now, think these abhorrent beings, and I purposely left out the work "human" , .... will be found due to media.. telling the public who thought they may have not taken any pictures worth  of anything.. but, now have gotten from "us" lots and lots of footage.
They will find those responsible. I really believe this. It's amazing what they can do now.

:bravo_2: I could not agree more.  I LOATHE politicians and the media.

Let the investigators do their job, we do not need a blow by blow of the dirty laundry.  We do not need to hear old neighbors talk about what a "great guy" this monster was. Enough.

As I am writing this, the entire city is basically on lockdown due to this clown.  His brother is dead, as well as a campus cop.  Two more bombs were detonated.  I am turning off the tv.  I feel sick.

Two men terrorizing a city reminds me of the Fall of 2002 in the DC area.  The Beltway Sniper.  For weeks, two men had an area paralyzed with fear.  I'll never forget the feeling of great unease and constantly peering over my shoulder every time I got gas.  I hope they catch the rat *astard soon.  I'm normally not an eye-for-an-eye type of guy but I do make exceptions.  I'm certainly willing to make one in this instance.

I don't agree with Obama on a lot of things, but I do agree w/him on one thing-----Bostonians are a tough, resilient group.  Once the threat is gone Boston will heal and this great community will come back bigger, better and badder than ever.

I certainly  understand your paranoia... then. How scary that must have been.  I remember that time in DC.
I have the same feeling when I travel into NY...and it's 12 yrs since 9/11.
I know that NY will probably sustain something else. "They" are not finished there.  Right now... they are building a new WTC bldg.... which looks like just another really high target to me. It's beautiful in the skyline , where I miss seeing the Twin Towers, but.... really high.
Whenever I go through the Lincoln tunnerl...I think... ??? To a show???
Terrible way to feel, but, hey  unfortunately it is the world we live in. Other people hate us for our freedoms.
So you don't agree with Obama on a lot of things.... LOL... me either..( but that's a whole other story)
and, I agree with you about Boston and it's not just Boston...look at New York....or any other area in our country.
When ever anywhere is attacked...it affects all of us. We are one. ..with our grief. One with our love of this country.
I agree with the song..."Proud To Be An American"

Oh, I remember the Beltway Sniper, that was a nightmare.  Much like this moron, holding an entire city hostage.  This cretin had to RUN OVER his brother to get away after the robbery. May he rot in hell.  Either that or he can stop by my house for a BLT. I have no use for such "individuals."

I disagree with 99.9% of what Obama says/does, but he does have it right.  Boston, like NYC, is filled with tenacious people.  We will rebound, stronger than before.

Everywhere you go people are on their phones.  Why does everybody have to talk on the phones so much?
But my biggest pet peeve about phones is unsolicited calls.  Also when someone has a wrong number and they don't say 'excuse me' but act like it is my fault because I answered the phone.  Do they think I intercepted their stupid call and I am not in my own home answering my own phone and they are the ones who made me stop what I was doing to answer the phone when they should have checked the number or dialed more carefully?

Now that is a long question?  I hope nobody has a pet peeve about someone asking a long, rambling question. :19: :043:

I am sick to death of people not spaying and neutering their cats. I live in a small town and people down the street from us are cat hoarders. There is always a million cats running around outside. The past three summers we have found three kittens on my property. The first one we kept, the second one we got into a non kill shelter and now the new 6 week old kitten will hopefully be able to go to the non kill shelter tomorrow. This is ridiculous.  SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR CATS PEOPLE! The sad part is no one will do anything because of who the people are.

That is one of my pet peeves too Court.  Also goes for dogs.  The woman across from us has NINE dogs and all but one of them were strays she took in.  One of them had puppies and brought three of them over to our barn when they got older.  She spays them usually but this dog she said she could not get her hands on in time.  It is utterly ridiculous how people treat their pets.  My son lives further down in the country than we do and he is always getting stray animals.

My vet said there are three houses in town that have tons of cats. She has tried everything. I called animal welfare on them last year but they didn't do anything.  I live in a small town, and right in the middle of it is one of the cat hoarders. I think the most cats we have seen outside their house was like 12. And thats just outside one day! Can't even imagine how many are in. Our ministry won't do anything about it because of who the people are.  But these cats are getting hit by cars, they are turning feral and running wild all over the place. I've seen countless cats at my house, three is the only that would come near us.

How terrible!
I had a precious little friend, too , for 18 years. We were attacked by a dog one night when I took her out ..on her leash..but, it was I who was hurt.
I send you my sympathy, because, a pet is definitely a member of the family and when you mourn a loss... it' s still hurts. the same... pet or person.

This happened to me about a year ago in the mall.  I was walking by one of those kiosks in the center of the mall and the woman trying to sell whatever callled me over.  When I ignored her she proceeded to say some very unkind things in Spanish.  Imagine her surprise (wish you could have seen her face......priceless) when I turned around and told her how rude SHE was in SPANISH!

Little Danny Snyder.  For the past 15 years Napoleon-on-the-Potomac (my apologies to Monsieur Bonaparte) has been the conductor of a slow-motion, never-ending train wreck known as the Washington Redskins.  Webster's should include his picture as an illustration of Einstein's definition of insanity.  More to come........

Political correctness run amok.   Assuming the news reports are true, a six-year old boy has been suspended from school for "sexual harassment."  His alleged offense----kissing the hand of a six-year old girl.  Sheesh!  The boy supposedly has some history of "behavioral issues" but doesn't the school's reaction seem more than a bit over-the-top.  If they had had these rules when the Prankster was growing up he would have been doing 5 to 10 at Attica by the age of 8.  He can imagine the following conversation with a fellow con:

MP:  Hey lefty, what are you in for?

Lefty:   Ten armed robberies.  Alimony for three exes makes you do strange things.  Prankster, what
                             are you in for?

MP:  Not sure----they said I hugged one girl too many.

YIKES!

Yes, I know what you mean--a little boy I know got in trouble at school for pretty much the same thing--the little girl's mom chewed out and threatened sexual harassment to the parent. He was 5!

Warning:  Major Rant Alert

What the Prankster is about to discuss is far more than a Pet Peeve, it is a moral outrage.  It is about the plight of the stray dogs of Sochi.  For those of you who want to witness the pageantry and glory of the Olympics untroubled by what’s happening outside the boundaries of competition (like NBC and most of the mainstream media) you probably should not read on.

My information comes primarily from the insufferably self-righteous, pompous pontificator, Keith Olbermann.  He is on a crusade to make the public aware of what’s going on in Sochi.  Although The Prankster can’t stand “Mr. Smug” he is in complete agreement with Olbermann on this issue.

There are stray dogs in Sochi estimated to number in the thousands.  These are not rabid, wild dogs, but rather well-cared for pets who were abandoned by their owners when the Russian Al Capone and his goon squad displaced these owners from their homes in order to build Putin’s Monuments, i.e., Olympic facilities.   By most reports coming out of Sochi, these dogs are largely well-groomed, well-behaved and friendly.

The solution to this problem?  Officially, the Russian government says it has hired a firm to capture, house, feed and relocate the dogs.  The reality---Sochi has hired an Exterminator Company to kill the strays at the rate of $35 a head.  How does the Exterminator accomplish this task?  By using some sort of muscle relaxing/paralytic drugs which they place in darts and shoot into the dogs or which they put into raw meat for the dogs to eat.  The dogs suffocate to death.    One eyewitness reported that a dog on the street shot with a dart took 90 minutes to die.  That’s right----90 MINUTES TO SUFFOCATE TO DEATH!

How’s the program going thus far---not too badly from the Exterminator Company’s standpoint.  Reportedly it has earned over 10 grand so far (300 dogs) and counting.  If they work really hard maybe they can get to a thousand OR MORE before the Games end.  Who knows?

And humans have the temerity to believe we’re superior to animals?  Each time the Prankster starts to believe this, he will think of the unconscionable cruelty shown to the strays of Sochi, the mass slaughter of animals whose only sin was to trust people to care for them.

What can be done?  Not much.  The Prankster is sure some petitions must be circulating on the web but they are little more than cries in the wilderness.  The Prankster has made a donation to a local group that tries to find homes for stray dogs.  Others might wish to do the same.

Boycott watching the Olympics?  A mass boycott would probably have some effect, but that is a pipe dream.  Hypocrite that he is, the Prankster will watch some of the Olympics, although probably less than he would have otherwise.

The closing of mental hospitals in the name of "human rights".  Now these poor people are either homeless, in jail, or prison because there is no where else to put them.  We have done more harm to them trying to protect their "rights" than we were when we cared for them in hospitals with trained personnel.
Here in Georgia we now have these private "care homes" where a few people live together with care givers.  The trouble is the "care givers" are people hired without qualifications (although this is not suppose to be the case), not enough people to do regular checks to be sure they are treated right, and the owners of these homes are making lots of money.  We just recently had a case of a women who owned four such houses in middle Georgia, did not check the records of her employees, hired anyone who she could find to work cheap.  The people who lived in one of these homes were being beaten and treated badly.  The ones doing the abuse said that the owner told them it was okay.
Sorry I got on my soapbox but having grown up in a town that had the largest mental hospital in the states at one time, I have compassion for these people.  My father worked in  the admission office, my mother was an occupational therapist, and I worked as a secretary in several areas.  Now the buildings are left empty and the people are in jails and prisons.  The percentage of inmates in jails that have mental problems is ridiculous.

New anchors not normally on on a Saturday are right there today.....endlessly telling us.... to go from this frozen news person to another all around a tri state area.
We in NJ are getting hit pretty badly. Hey, Christie stopped campaigning in New England and came ....home?

To veer off a bit from our "pet peeves" topic. How can we , as more mature, older people get this cursive writing put back into our schools?
I find it terrible that the children, as I said in my post, can not read what I write to them.
Why has this been taken out of our schools? And, if the children, future adults and leaders in our country can not read or WRITE cursive...how will they put down their signature when it's required?
S0...they will "print" what they are saying, writing...then again.... print their signature ?? Ridiculous!

Honestly, what can we do? Tell me to bring it up in a town meeting...sure! There are so many other things so wrong in our towns....half these people don't speak correct grammar....cursive....they wouldn't even know what I'm talking about. ....Sad!

Probably a very common gripe but has anyone yet mentioned the tidal wave of misspelled names adoring the name badges of today's youth? It can take a full 30 seconds sometimes to even guess what that odd collection of y's i's and u's is actually supposed to mean. I saw one contestant on TV a few weeks back that was named 'Destane', which I took to be a misspelling of disdain, weird thing to name your kid for sure, but when the name was spoken aloud it turned out to be yet another unfortunate misspelling of 'Destiny'! Why?!!!
